Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) Operator – The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and team-oriented individual to join its professional Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) team. The WRRF team operates a newly innovative activated sludge facility, utilizing Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS), serving the population of the City of Mt. Pleasant. The facility is operated and maintained by six licensed WRRF Operators, a WRRF Maintenance Operations Coordinator, and a WRRF Superintendent utilizing a team philosophy that values the contributions of each individual team member. We are accepting applications for this role as a long-time member of our team begins a well-earned retirement.

 

This position is a Monday through Friday shift working 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a rotating weekend schedule that occurs every sixth week creating two three-day weekends on either end of a 10-day working stretch. Employees must also be available for call-ins, after hours, wet weather events, and occasional holidays.

 

Minimum qualifications for this position include basic mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and computer skills in addition to a high school diploma. A highly qualified candidate would have a demonstrated skill set and licensure as it pertains to WRRF in process control, laboratory analysis, mechanical and electrical maintenance, SCADA & PLC controls, construction equipment, industrial pre-treatment, storm water, knowledge of common Microsoft Office suite applications with a focus on Excel, Word, and Outlook, CMMS, GIS or other related software, and a degree in water/WRRF technologies or related fields.

 

Employees in this position receive both on the job training and industry-specific learning opportunities for continuing education to maintain licensure. Tuition reimbursement is available for job-related college coursework.

 

A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record required. Following hire, applicant must possess or obtain a valid Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) Class “D” Operator’s Certificate following first eligible EGLE test cycle to remain employed.

 

The starting pay rate for 2026 ranges from $23.14 to $24.14/hr., depending on qualifications and experience. The maximum base pay rate is $25.90/hr. and is typically reached after one or two years of employment, depending on the starting rate. The hourly rate of pay is increased by procurement of EGLE state licenses. 2026 rates: D-$2.57/hr.; C-$3.15/hr.; B-$4.01/hr.; A-$4.84/hr. Licenses are not cumulative.

In addition, selected applicants will be invited to undergo in-person skills testing in basic chemistry, electrical, math, and mechanical skills. In-person testing is tentatively scheduled for September 10, 2026.

 

Please note that not all applicants who complete testing will be invited to interview.

Interviews, which will include a facility tour, are tentatively scheduled for September 25. We anticipate the selected candidate to begin work in October 2026.
