ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB FUNCTIONS:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Operates light and heavy-duty trucks, loader, tractor, and all other construction equipment as maybe required within the department.
2. Operates any and all specialized equipment within the Department of Public Works. Maintains streets and sidewalks, including tree trimming and cutting, drive sweeper, sewer cleaning machines, (Jetter-Vac) Rubbish Trucks, Loaders, asphalt hot box, all equipment and maintenance pertaining to the Department of Public Works.
3. Responds to all emergencies and/or overtime duties involving failure of city utilities system, including: snow plowing and leaf collection, sewer back-ups, water main breaks, collapse of catch basins, sink holes, trees, lawn equipment.
4. Performs Parking Meter Maintenance when assigned. Performs any related work as may be required by the Supervisor of Public Works.
5. May work alone or participates in the work of a small operational crew engaged in repair, maintenance, construction, installation or servicing of the following: city streets, alleys, curbs and sidewalks, water distribution system, Storm and Sanitary Systems, public buildings and mechanical and equipment repairs.
6. Serves as a construction inspector on various construction projects, capital improvements and repair programs.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

- Minimum Qualifications of High School Diploma or GED
- S4 Water Distribution License at hire preferred, OR ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
- Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques commonly used in the Public Works, and maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the work and equipment operations.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinance and regulations governing the operation of automotive and other motorized vehicles.
- Knowledge and ability to supervise the work of an operational crew, in performing a variety of tasks within all departments.
- Knowledge of City’s Water and Sewer and Storm system. Sanitary Pump station experience.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods under adverse climatic conditions.
- Mechanical Aptitude.
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks.
- CDL/Class B- with Air Brakes Endorsement, within a year and possess updated medical card.
- Ability to communicate effectively and understand oral instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, City officials, professional contacts, the media, and the public.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and work effectively under stress in contentious or confrontational situations.
- Ability to critically assess situations, problem-solve, and work within deadlines and changes in work priorities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an outdoor setting with varied temperatures of hot and cold weather. May be asked to lift up to 100 pounds. The noise level in the work environment may be noisy based on the equipment and machines used for the job.
