Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performs laboratory analysis, operates solid systems, maintains records, and is responsible for the repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery. This position involves skilled labor in the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and related facilities.

Typical Duties:


Operate all processes within the wastewater treatment plant.

Collect wastewater samples and conduct all required laboratory tests while maintaining all laboratory equipment.

Compile reports and record data on plant operations and lab tests.

Perform scheduled inspections on equipment, machinery, meters, gauges, and other related components as directed.

Read and record all indicators necessary for plant process control.

Conduct preventative maintenance and repair work on pumps, motors, and electrical equipment.

Ensure cleaning and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and grounds, including washing floors, windows, and walls.

Operate and maintain emergency equipment.

Handle process chemicals and make necessary adjustments to chemical dosing.

Qualifications

High School Education, GED, or equivalent education.

Ability to acquire a State of Michigan D or higher wastewater certification from EGLE.

Valid Michigan Driver’s License.

Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods used in wastewater treatment plant operations.

Previous experience at an operational level in a wastewater treatment plant.

Considerable knowledge of laboratory procedures and testing protocols used in wastewater treatment plants.

Understanding of city sewer systems, plant systems, and maintenance/repair of these systems.

Familiarity with the principles of wastewater treatment requirements.

Knowledge of basic chemistry and bacteriological principles applicable to wastewater analysis.

Extensive hands-on experience in equipment maintenance, electrical systems, and plumbing, with a proven record of ensuring operational reliability and safety.

Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.




Comments

Operators work a full-time schedule which requires occasional overtime, and a rotating weekend and holiday schedule.

Operators will be required to participate in an emergency on-call schedule.
