Water/Sewer Operator Job Description

This position will perform technical, semi-skilled and labor work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and machinery in the Water Treatment plants and the supporting distribution system, as well as in the sewer collection and transmission system.  The position will require the maintenance of records, preparation of reports, performance of water quality testing and other related work.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following job functions.  These examples are not inclusive of all the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function adequately.

·         Operating treatment plant machines and equipment to provide continuous water treatment, while meeting state requirements, and producing sufficient water for system users

·         Operating the Township’s SCADA system

·         Ability to accurately maintain the records associated with operations of a water treatment plant such as, water flows, pressure, temperature and chemical usage. 

·         Must be capable of operating low service, high service, transfer and chemical feed pumps

·         Assist in the preparation of weekly and monthly reports required for internal management of the system and reporting to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)

·         Troubleshoot and repair equipment

·         Testing and analysis for chlorine residual and collect water samples per EGLE requirements

·         Tasks associated with the installation, maintenance and/or repair, cleaning and inspecting of sanitary mains, laterals, manholes, lift stations and related facilities

·         Operating and performing routine maintenance of pumps, generator, compressors and other equipment as required

·         Repair of watermains, hydrants, meters, valves, water taps, customer service lines and system flushing

·         Accurately read and interpret maps, specifications, drawings, blueprints and attend construction meetings as necessary

·         Lifting material and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds

·         Ability to enter and work in confined space conditions as well as elevated space conditions utilizing proper safety precautions and equipment related to all work performed

·         Marking Township owned utilities for Miss Dig requests

·         Perform meter reading, conduct service calls, collect water samples, meter maintenance and turn on/off service

·         May be required to work in inclement weather conditions and/or vehicle traffic conditions

·         Responsible for some mowing and snow removal

 

1.       Must have a valid driver's license, and high school diploma or GED

2.       Minimum D4 and S4 license or ability to obtain within two years

3.       Must be able to handle customer complaints, daily work orders, assist contractors and inventory of materials

4.       Knowledge of the rules, regulations, methods, materials, and equipment used in water treatment water distribution systems and sewer collection systems

5.       Mechanical ability

6.       Ability to work independently and as part of a team in order to complete tasks

7.       Must be available to work overtime and “on call” duty as scheduled, including weekends and holidays

8.       Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide

9.       Ability to read, write and speak English
