The City of Ovid is accepting applications for the position of Public Works Supervisor. This full-time, hands-on leadership role is responsible for the day -to-day supervision of the Public Works Department, including operations such as streets, water/sewer systems, snow removal, equipment maintenance, parks, cemetery and city facilities. This position is ideal for a working supervisor who is comfortable leading a small team while also actively participating in fieldwork. Key Responsibilities:
• Supervise and work alongside public works staff to perform maintenance of city infrastructure (streets, sidewalks, storm drains, water lines, sewer systems, parks, and buildings).
• Schedule and assign daily work tasks; prioritize projects based on seasonal needs and emergencies.
• Operate and maintain city-owned vehicles and equipment, including plow trucks, backhoes, and mowers.
• Conduct inspections and perform preventive maintenance on public facilities and utility systems.
• Respond to water main breaks, sewer backups, and snow/ice conditions.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
• Provide courteous, professional service to residents and businesses.
• Assist with budget preparation, inventory, and vendor coordination.
• Enforce safety protocols and city policies. Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED (required); vocational or technical training in public works or construction trades (preferred).
• Minimum 3 years of public works or construction experience, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role.
• Valid Michigan Class B CDL with Air Brakes
• Working knowledge of water/sewer systems, heavy equipment operation, road maintenance, and public safety standards.
• Valid State of Michigan S-3 and D-3 water licenses and L-1 Wastewater stabilization Lagoon License.
• Ability to read maps, work orders, and technical manuals.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.
• Availability of after-hours emergencies, on-call rotations, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment:
• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and involves physical labor, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and operation of heavy equipment.
• Small team environment; flexibility and teamwork are essential.
