WATER PLANT METER READER/OPERATOR

The City of Grosse Ponte Farms is currently seeking applicants for a Water Plant Operator. This position will require working a swing shift with some overtime. Qualifications include having an F-4 water classification or the ability to obtain F-4 water classification within 18 months. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid State of Michigan operator’s license, including physical capabilities to fulfill the demands of the job. An applicant with an Associate of Applied Science in Water Purification Technology, or equivalent, is preferred. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

To perform technical, semi-skilled and labor work in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery in a water filtration and pumping plant; to maintain records, prepare reports and perform laboratory analysis, maintenance and installation of water meters, mains, valves, fire hydrants, or water service connections and related facilities of a water distribution system; and to perform related work as required in a unionized work environment and position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Work is performed under the supervision of the Water Superintendent, Maintenance Foreman, or Distribution Foreman.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:

An employee in this class may be required upon to do any or all the following (these examples do not include all the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform):

  • Observe and monitor CSO’s, gauges, levels, and other instruments to maintain quality and pressure of drinking water throughout the distribution system.
  • Operate, maintain, and lubricate high and low service pumps.
  • Fill chemical storage tanks and adjust chemical feed rates.
  • Responsible for all aspects of operation of the Water Filtration Plant without direct supervision on afternoon and midnight shifts.
  • Perform various chemical and biological tests and lab QA/QC.
  • Prepare chemical solutions.
  • Clean and maintain building and laboratory equipment.
  • Operate emergency equipment in case of power failure.
  • Read and record rates of water flow, pressure, temperature, atmospheric conditions, chemical usage, and other records.
  • Assist in the preparation of various reports.
  • Observe loss of head through filters and backwash as required.
  • Detect and repair defects in water and sewage pumping equipment and assist in the disassembly and overhaul of equipment.
  • Inspect operating condition of water pumps and other equipment.
  • Collect samples of water from designated locations in the water distribution system.
  • Rebuild filters and maintain coagulation basin.

· Participate in the location and repair of leaks in a water distribution system.

· Participate in the installation and repair of fire hydrants.

· Participate in the installation of water service connections.

· Participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of stop gates and other valves.

· Participate in the laying of water distribution lines.

· Read, repair and test water meters.

· Prepare and maintain work schedules, records and reports as required.

· Locate and mark buried distribution lines and valves for protection against excavation projects.

· Test water hydrants.

· Painting and numbering of water hydrants.

· Participate in the chlorinating of water mains.

· Participate in the tapping of water mains.

· Requisition materials and equipment for maintenance and construction projects.

· Investigate high water bill complaints.

· Perform plumbing and air conditioning system inspections. Turn on and shut off water services.

  • Perform related work as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in water filtration and pumping station operations and maintenance.
  • The ability to perform basic wet chemistry lab tests.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare accurate reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees.
  • An Associate of Applied Science in Water Purification Technology or equivalent.

An employee in this class, upon appointment, must have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school
  • Some experience and training in the operation, maintenance and repair of water filtration and pumping plant equipment and facilities.
  • Must have minimum of F-4 and/or S-4 water classification or the ability to obtain within 18 months.
  • This is a union classified position.
